The Light That Fills the World: Sounds from California to Alaska

This concert takes listeners from the jubilant yet often harsh realities of California’s Gold Rush era, to the sights and sounds of the Grand Canyon evoked by the son of German immigrants 13 years after a drive across Arizona, to the final work of a Hungarian refugee conveying feelings about a just-ended world war and memories of a beloved homeland, to the richly textured yet mystical depiction of a slumbering urban city by a second-generation composer considered the most “American” of American composers, and to a transcendent and meditative work by a composer born in Mississippi and inspired by the landscapes of Alaska.
