Portland, OR—Inuksuit
September 24, 2022 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm
DonationAUXART combines creative energies with percussionist and composer Christopher Whyte to host a colossal percussion summit as the finale of its To The River sculpture and sound-art residency at Zidell Yards. Whyte will direct a gathering of dozens of percussionists from around the region to perform John Luther Adams’ Inuksuit in a roving dynamic across the entirety of the project’s 150-yard-long waveform installation. Adams, who composes evolving soundscapes that respond to natural forces, created Inuksuit to be performed among audiences across a landscape. It draws its name from the totemic structures built and used in the arctic circle by native peoples for mapping and navigation.
Christopher Whyte is a founding member of the Portland Percussion Institute, a resident percussionist of Third Angle New Music, and on the faculty at Portland State University. The event coincides with public open hours for experiencing the entire project.
Tickets to this event are free, but the musicians and AUXART are asking for donations of any amount to support this extraordinary work.
